Colonial Dames seek county help promoting new Women Veterans memorial in Eden Park

Katherine Durkis of the National Society of Colonial Dames of Ohio presented a proposal for a new Women Veterans memorial to be sited in Eden Park and timed for Veterans Day 2026.
Durkis traced the marker's history: a 1985 plaque honoring women veterans has weathered and the group is advancing a larger memorial with a dedicated walkway from Eden Park Drive. She said the group issued a national call for artists, received 66 submissions, and the art jury has narrowed proposals to two semifinalists.
"We are now seeking to create a memorial that reflects the significance of women's contributions in permanent recognition of the service, the sacrifice, the leadership, and the love of country," Durkis said.
She described candidate imagery (likely a figurative bronze sculpture) and said the Colonial Dames will be the lead fundraiser; they are partnering with Cincinnati Parks, the Cincinnati Park Commissioners and local veterans organizations. Durkis said the group expects to meet fundraising goals and is hosting a Flag Day fundraiser on June 13.
Commissioners offered county communications support and connections with veterans events (the county's Aug. 15 veterans appreciation event at TQL Stadium) and veteran-service contacts to broaden outreach. Board members also flagged possible coordination with the county's 250th commemoration and the Commission on Women and Girls.
Durkis asked the board to publicize the memorial and promised to circulate contact and event information to county staff.
Next steps: presenters will continue community outreach and fundraising; commissioners offered to help connect the organizers to veterans groups and county communications channels.
