Pingree Grove board approves optional composting franchise agreement

Pingree Grove trustees voted March 16 to enter into a franchise agreement with Wastistnot to offer a voluntary, subscription-based residential compost-pickup program.
Andy, who presented the item to the board, described the program as "a completely optional opt-in program for residents who are interested in a more robust composting program," noting subscribers would receive bi-weekly pickups and could receive compost back at year-end. "If residents aren't interested, it won't affect them at all," he said, and added that legal review found no cost to the village in providing the program.
Trustees asked about advertising, signage and logistics; staff said the village would publicize the service and could explore using an existing village sign to promote subscriptions. The motion to approve the franchise passed on a roll call with trustees voting yes.
The agreement will allow Wastistnot to begin subscriber outreach and, according to staff, delivery of initial subscription buckets in May for residents who sign up. Staff said they would confirm any signage restrictions tied to the fund that paid for the sign.
