At a March 19 budget workshop, Pete, a district finance presenter, told the Gresham-Barlow SD 10J budget committee that the district is narrowing its estimate of next year’s reductions to roughly $10 million–$11.5 million and that the district has already reduced about $8.1 million in the current year.
“We're thinking that the reduction will be somewhere between 10 and 11.5 million,” Pete said, and he emphasized the magnitude by adding that $1 million roughly equals 7.5 licensed positions or 11.8 classified positions. He also stressed the legal nature of appropriation limits: “the legal budget is just one page,” meaning the committee sets a dollar cap by major function while operational staffing and FTE remain management decisions.
Why the cuts: staff and committee members were pointed toward three systemic pressures.
