Gresham — The Gresham-Barlow School District board discussed a proposed naming policy at its March 12 work session that would standardize how the district names entire facilities, individual spaces and honorary plaques.
Tracy, who drafted the proposal, said the update consolidates three areas into one policy: naming a facility, naming areas or spaces within a facility, and installing honorary plaques. She said the proposal responds to several ad hoc namings and requests to honor long-serving employees.
Directors asked whether a honoree must be deceased and proposed options including a mandatory waiting period before renaming (examples discussed: three to five years) and grandfathering currently named spaces to avoid immediate controversy. “Maybe grandfathering in the names of currently named facilities stay that way for another three years until the board has a chance to reconsider,” one director said.
The board discussed sensitivity about names tied to tribal significance. A staff member referenced an Oregon Administrative Rule that limits names associated with tribes unless a written agreement is in place, and directors asked staff to footnote that guidance in the policy.
Members also discussed commercial naming and fundraising; several directors cautioned against large corporate naming rights at K–12 facilities, though banner-style sponsorships were said to be an existing, lower-risk practice.
Tracy said she would take the board’s edits back to the policy committee to refine language about living honorees, review intervals, definitions of facility vs. space, and develop an AR describing the nomination and review process.
The item will return to a future policy-committee meeting for revision before coming back to the board for action.
