Fond du Lac council backs Brothertown Indian Nation’s bid for federal restoration

Griffith outlined the tribe’s historical record, saying that a post‑1839 legislative action and a 2012 Department of the Interior finding meant the Brothertown would need an act of Congress to regain recognition.
The letter described potential benefits of restoration — tribal infrastructure, access to federal programs, cultural and economic contributions to the area, and enhanced stewardship of Lake Winnebago waterways. Griffith said local organizations and elected officials have expressed support and described the tribe’s long local history and civic involvement.
Council members thanked Griffith, asked a few clarifying questions and then moved, seconded and unanimously approved resolution 9226. The council’s action directs the city to send the approved letter to the district’s member of Congress.
Council did not attach legal language beyond the resolution and did not stipulate funding or other commitments; the item was recorded as a formal expression of municipal support and will be forwarded to Congress.
