Gallatin High Schools first unified cheer team honored by Sumner County School Board

The Sumner County School Board took a moment during its regular meeting to recognize Gallatin High Schools first Green Wave Unified Cheer Team and coaches for their inaugural season and a fifth-place finish at the state Special Olympics competition.
Miss Stewart introduced the team and named student members including Derek Preston, Alex Quintella, Gabby Howell, Aaron Simpson, Kayn Lauderdale, Caitlyn Avarett and Canari Crawford. Coaches who helped form the program including Mr. Anderson and co-coach Tabitha Graves were praised for creating an inclusive program that paired typical student athletes with students participating in Special Olympics unified activities.
Johnny Anderson, who identified himself as assistant principal at Gallatin High School, described the teams reception at a pep rally and called the students performance "a special moment" for the school community. Coaches and school leaders emphasized the programs value for inclusion, student growth and community pride and said they hope to expand the model to other schools.
The recognition was ceremonial; no board action was required. Officials encouraged families and the community to continue supporting unified activities and other inclusive programs in district schools.
