Planning commission re-establishes sustainability committee, appoints four commissioners

The Planning Commission voted to re-establish a sustainability committee first formed in 2021 and appointed four commissioners to serve as its initial planning-commission representatives.

Planner Nick said the committee helped craft the sustainability elements of the master plan and recommended reconstituting it with planning-commission members leading the effort; he noted committees must avoid creating a quorum and suggested three members, though the commission amended that to four appointees. “The sustainability committee was established in 2021 to enhance the way sustainability and resiliency planning is done in our city,” Nick said, describing the committee’s prior role in drafting sustainability content for the master plan and staff support for meetings.

After a volunteer call and brief discussion about membership and administrative support, the commission moved to appoint Mr. Josh Solomon, Mr. Glenn Shepard, Mr. Lewis Samson and Mr. Aaron Hail to the sustainability committee. The commission will invite previous external participants who were involved in 2021–2023 and ask the city council to designate at least one council member to participate or be invited.

Staff said they will email the appointed commissioners to schedule an initial meeting and provide administrative support for virtual or in-person sessions. The committee will recap prior accomplishments and help steer implementation of sustainability-related master-plan actions.

Next steps: staff will coordinate schedules and provide a first-meeting agenda and background materials to the appointed commissioners.
