Commissioners discuss splitting property tax payments; approve Lake Meriwether baseball field funding

Commissioners discussed a proposal to allow property taxpayers to pay their county taxes in two installments each year rather than a single payment due before Christmas. Commissioner Thor said splitting payments 50/50 in June and December could help elderly and low-income taxpayers; staff said the change would require ordinance revision and that the tax commissioner would need billing changes. The board asked staff to research the ordinance and operational impacts and to return with a proposal for the April 13 meeting.
Separately the board approved funding to complete fencing and related work at Lake Meriwether’s baseball field for the 14U program. Commissioners reviewed three quotes ranging from $26,850 to $34,449; with an available recreation account balance of $57,457, the board approved quotes not to exceed $28,000 to be paid from the recreation account. Staff said the recreation account is funded by sponsorships, fees and concessions rather than the general taxpayer levy.
Both items were discussion-level and operational in nature; no ordinance change on tax billing was adopted at the March 24 meeting.
