Sunset Park school nearing completion; builder says project is on schedule and within budget

Leitner Construction representatives told the Rockland School Board Monday that construction of the new Sunset Park elementary is progressing and remains on schedule and within budget.
Assistant Superintendent Darren Wilson introduced the construction team and previewed aerial footage and interior images. Jack Leitner and colleagues showed the parking lot and main entrance grading, poured sidewalks under covered walkways, and near-complete roofing and flat-cap sheets. Inside, presenters displayed painted accent walls, installed casework, epoxy flooring in restrooms and bottle-filling stations, and storefronts for classrooms.
When a board member asked directly whether the project was on time and on budget, a Leitner representative answered: "We're keeping the schedule, and we're within the budget." In follow-up, the presenter said the construction contract with contingencies is about $57 million.
Presenters said kitchen equipment delivery is scheduled for April and that staff will wrap up the serving and dishwasher areas before moving on to remaining work. They also described the commons/performance space, noting a ceiling divider that will allow the cafeteria and performance space to be separated or opened for larger events.
Board members asked about the possibility of in-person tours once the work is complete; Leitner representatives said they would schedule site visits for board members.
Sunset Park was described in the facility presentation as a project that reuses some portions of the existing site while opening a new school in 2026. The presentation noted a recap of district-wide capital needs but emphasized that Sunset Park's completion is on the near-term schedule.
The board did not take any formal votes on the construction presentation; the update was received as part of the business meeting agenda and the subsequent work session.
