School board approves multiple executive director hires after closed-session recommendations

The Rockland School Board voted Monday night to approve six superintendent-recommended executive director appointments after an hour in executive session.

The board approved recommendations for an executive director of secondary service team, executive director of elementary instruction, executive director of secondary leadership, executive director of secondary instruction, executive director of elementary service team and executive director of elementary leadership. Multiple motions carried by 6-1 margins; two motions passed 6-0, including one in which Dr. Belton recused himself.

Board member Ms. Daniel said she supported the individuals but objected to the selection process. "I just disagree with the process and some of the requirements," she said, adding that her concern would "be reflected in my vote." Her remark accompanied at least one opposing vote; most other motions passed with a clear majority.

Several motions were made immediately after the board returned from executive session. Where seconders were recorded, Mr. Nozal and Ms. Harris were listed as seconds on personnel votes; several motions did not show explicit mover names in the spoken record.

The personnel approvals followed routine procedural steps: the board paused public business, met in executive session to discuss "the organizational pattern of the administration and administrative recommendations," and then reconvened and moved the recommendations into the record for formal votes.

The board also approved a consent action agenda that included minutes from the March 10 business meeting and additional personnel recommendations; that consent motion passed 7-0 earlier in the meeting.

There were no public comments on the appointments during the business meeting recorded in the transcript. The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for April 14, with an executive session at 5 p.m. followed by the business meeting at 6 p.m.
