Red River Road bridge advances after CSX grants right-of-way variance; legislative funding still needed

Court members gave a substantive update on the Red River Road bridge project during the March 11 meeting, reporting several technical and funding milestones and outlining the remaining steps.

A magistrate said a box of previously unshared documents contained signed ownership agreements and contacts that helped move the project forward. "CSX has officially approved the rightway variance," the magistrate said, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has acknowledged the variance and requested additional details on drainage and temporary fencing. Once those details are returned, preliminary plans can be approved and final plans prepared.

The magistrate said Representative Dodson and Senator Elkins helped get the project added to the legislative budget process and that the bridge has been placed in the biennium budget; if the plans are approved and the legislature provides funding as currently proposed, the project could proceed without waiting for the 2030 plan. A letting is tentatively flagged for January 2027, although the magistrate stressed that timing could move depending on plan approvals and funding.

Why it matters: The bridge replacement affects residents who face seasonal isolation when flooding damages the crossing; officials said avoiding another winter delay is a priority.
