Sussex County outlines bridge replacement, stormwater and trails funding as spring projects

County engineering and planning staff briefed the Board of County Commissioners on March 25 on several near-term infrastructure projects and funding opportunities.
The Division of Engineering reported it had completed bid reviews and is recommending Commissioner approval for an approximately $1.8 million contract with Gray Construction of Paterson, N.J., to replace Sussex County Bridge X43 on Unionville Road (County Route 651). The division said construction will be funded in the construction phase by NJDOT Local Bridge Transportation Trust Fund grants and will require a full closure and detour; work is anticipated to begin in late summer. The recommendation was presented to the board for consideration; staff noted the board must still formally award the contract at a subsequent meeting.
Traffic crews are preparing to install new speed limit and warning signs on County Route 515 in Vernon following an engineering speed-limit reevaluation, with installation expected by mid-April. Public Works crews also remobilized to complete stormwater upgrades and to install a new water-quality chamber on County Route 613 in Byram to reduce debris entering Lake Mohawk; crews expect to complete that work in four to five days.
Staff reminded municipalities of the Sussex County Trails Grant Program, funded through the Farmland Preservation, Recreation & Open Space Trust Fund. Applications for the 2026 program are due May 15; grants may fund construction, rehabilitation, restoration, and maintenance of publicly owned shared-use trails and municipal applicants are encouraged to contact the Division of Planning for eligibility review.
Department speakers provided contact numbers for staff questions and said the Division of Engineering will present formal contract awards and scheduling details to the board at upcoming meetings.
