Residents urge Springfield commissioners to reject Route 72 jail location as county seeks rezoning

The Springfield City Commission on a public hearing considered a county request to rezone about 28.37 acres at 2683 Springfield Jamestown Pike from Springfield Township Agricultural to a city Institutional and Educational district to allow a Clark County jail and public safety complex.
City planning staff told the commission the parcels were annexed in 2016, are undeveloped and not within a floodplain, and that the proposed district conditionally permits government uses including a public safety facility. “Overall staff recommendation is approval of applicants request,” staff said during the presentation.
County officials — including Charles Patterson of the Clark County Commission and Sheriff Clark — told the commission the county has a letter of intent to purchase the property and is advancing due diligence. Patterson said the county evaluated more than 20 sites and needs at least 10 acres to build a single-floor jail with room to expand.
