Anchor Bay board approves $9.34 million in bond change orders and several construction and technology awards

The Anchor Bay School Board on Monday approved a set of negotiated change orders and contract awards that move forward the next phase of the district's bond-funded construction and energy work.
Administration told the board that pricing returned for the value-added scope of earlier bond work could be accommodated within the $9.7 million allowance the board approved in January. The package that the board approved includes additional classroom additions at elementary schools, a separated bus loop at Ashley Elementary, and site work; the board approved the construction award package and a 10% owner contingency for a total request of $9,337,543. The district will hold roughly $1.3 million plus contingency to cover Middle School South fire-suppression (sprinkler) and lighting numbers when those bids are final and will return for approval in April.
Administration also presented and the board approved awards for phase two of the energy bond boilers and hot-water pumps across multiple buildings, with low bidders named for elementary and middle-school components and Centric retained to provide engineering, controls, commissioning and a performance guarantee for the energy measures. Centric's role includes guaranteeing measured savings; if the guaranteed savings are not realized, Centric is contractually obligated to reimburse the district.
In a separate vote the board approved bond-funded technology purchases to refresh teacher devices at Lighthouse Elementary and Middle School South (a mix of laptops and desktops, with five-year warranties) and a contract to upgrade fiber and network switching. Administration said the device refresh is intended as part of a multi-year rolling replacement plan to avoid a mass replacement in a single year.
Board members asked for clarity on logistics: the district confirmed old boilers will be removed and typically scrapped as part of demolition, and the sprinkler portion of the Middle School South work is still out to bid and will return to the board next month.
Budget and process details: Brad Colts of the district's construction partner reviewed the CCD pricing and said the CCD package priced at about $8.5 million is affordable within the previously authorized $9.7 million set-aside. The board moved and approved the recommended awards by roll-call votes during the meeting.
What happens next: District staff will finalize contracts, proceed with plan review and site mobilization for the classroom additions and site work, and return with final sprinkler bid numbers and lighting costs for Middle School South in April.
