At the March 25 meeting, the Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board voted to accept the district's fiscal year 2025 audit and compliance questionnaire and approved several administrative items including personnel scheduling, the 2026–27 benefit plan, revised transportation and health‑service calendars, and ELA curriculum adoption recommendations.
Audit acceptance: Chief business officer Mr. Harmon briefed the board on the independent audit by Heinfeld Meech. The audit included a single‑audit and a compliance questionnaire covering 171 questions; the district recorded 14 findings across eight areas (approximately 91% compliance). Mr. Harmon said the single‑audit reported no significant deficiencies or material weaknesses and classified Maricopa Unified as a low‑risk auditee. He noted recurring areas for attention—student attendance records and capital asset inventory management—and said corrective action plans will be developed.
Benefit plan: Staff presented the district benefit plan for the 2026–27 plan year and told the board the district will absorb an approximate 9% premium increase for employee plans; dependent coverage will reflect the rate change. The board approved the plan.
Personnel and calendars: The board approved the personnel schedule (contracts were distributed March 16 and due April 2) and approved minor revisions to transportation and health‑service work calendars to accommodate start/route training and health‑services training dates.
Curriculum adoption: Dr. Scott presented the recommendation of the ELA adoption committee to adopt McGraw‑Hill/Savvas Spalding materials for ELA advanced placement instruction and related AP publications. Staff said additional parent review produced limited additional input; the board approved the adoption.
Votes: For recorded roll‑call votes on action items during the meeting the transcript records board members Ben Owens, Lisa Garcia, Carmel Lopez and Pattie Cuchary voting 'Aye' on the listed items. The board took no recorded 'No' or 'Abstain' votes in the transcripted motions for these actions.
Next steps: Staff indicated they will implement approved items (benefits enrollment, calendar adjustments and curriculum ordering) and will return audit corrective action plans and outstanding contract return data as requested by the board.
