The Clay County Commission adopted resolution 202688 designating April 2026 as Autism Acceptance Month, recognizing local service providers and school-based supports.
"April is recognized across the United States as autism acceptance month," Commissioner Wington read, noting the county's intent to promote understanding and early identification. The resolution singled out registered behavioral technicians and board-certified behavioral analysts in the North Kansas City School District and acknowledged Easter Seals Midwest for services to families.
Representatives from Easter Seals Midwest described local programs and early-intervention testing. Clay Barry, vice president of programs, said Easter Seals serves more than 25,000 people across its bi-state service area and "hundreds" locally in Clay County. He encouraged families to seek assessment and said the organization currently has early-intervention testing available without a waiting list.
Casey Melanch (autism director) described early behavioral signs that may prompt evaluation, including fixation on objects and reduced social attention, and gave a direct contact line for local referrals.
Commissioners thanked providers and members of the county Developmental Disability and Resource Board for their work. The commission paused to take photographs and present certificates following the proclamation.
No formal vote beyond adoption of the resolution was required.
