Weed City Council unanimously accepted the fiscal year 2022–23 basic financial statements and authorized filing of the audit with a motion adopting Resolution 42‑2024.
The auditor told the council the review proceeded smoothly and commended city staff for improvements over prior audits. "As you may remember ... that was approximately 7 million" related to a recent fire settlement, the auditor said, and explained the accounting treatment: roughly $4.5 million was recorded as deferred revenue to pay for anticipated infrastructure and capital work rather than recognizing all proceeds immediately as general-fund revenue.
Council discussion focused on new accounting and audit standards that will require more formalized risk assessments and other disclosures in future audits; the auditor and finance staff said they will work with council to implement required changes for subsequent fiscal years. The council adopted the resolution to accept and file the audit without further revisions.
What happens next: staff will continue implementing the new audit and financial-reporting processes and will present updates in upcoming meetings as the city prepares for the FY23–24 audit cycle.
