Interim public works staff briefed the Rohnert Park City Council on the city’s storm preparedness and creek maintenance plan ahead of the winter season.
Staff said the city has focused pre‑season maintenance and mitigation on Coleman Creek, Copeland Creek, Crane Creek and Five Creek, conducting vegetation removal and sediment extraction where permitted. Video inspections of storm drains from Hartwood to the golf course found no major obstructions or pipe collapse, staff said.
The city maintains a sandbag station at the sports center parking lot and runs 24/7 storm monitoring with zoned field crews; staff said generators and sewer lift stations are tested and resupplied to reduce the risk of power loss at critical utilities. Staff described internal alarm levels tied to the Laguna de Santa Rosa stream gauge (mobilization at ~84 ft, increased concern above 85 ft, major flooding at higher thresholds) and noted the city coordinates closures and field responses with public safety and the Sonoma County water agency.
Council members asked whether localized field drains and culverts near Hartwood and nearby neighborhoods are within city responsibility; staff said some segments are city responsibility and that vegetative work must be completed before the Nov. 1 start of the seasonal work moratorium under stream‑bed permit restrictions. Staff said additional work will continue next year as resources allow.
Residents were reminded to clear gutters and inlets, sign up for alerts (NIXLE, website and social media), and use the sports center sandbag station in advance of storms.
