City staff gave a progress update on the skate park renovation, telling the Parks and Recreation Commission that equipment for the approved project has been ordered and a closure is planned to allow public works crews to remove the existing equipment and prepare the site.
Staff said signage will be posted by the end of the week and the planned closure would begin Monday, Feb. 2; public works estimated the on-site removal and pre-install work would require approximately three to four weeks, with the new equipment arriving in early March. Staff emphasized they will post updates on the city website and use social media and direct outreach to skate park families and local high schools to share closure and reopening information.
The commission heard community concerns about preserving salvageable pieces. Staff described outreach to auctioneers who declined to assume liability for removing the large site-built halfpipe because it would need to be cut into many pieces and reassembled — a process that carries heavy equipment and safety risks. Staff said smaller removable elements might be auctioned; otherwise, the large ramp will be cut, recycled, or disposed of, and staff will coordinate messaging to the skate community about any auction dates.
Staff also said they plan a soft reopening followed by a community grand opening with local skate shops and demos once the park is safe and fully installed.
