A San Carlos resident raised safety and connectivity concerns about bike lanes on San Carlos Avenue during public comment at the Planning and Transportation Commission meeting on Feb. 2.
The caller, identified only as Kayla, said she grew up in San Carlos and praised existing bike lanes but told the commission the lanes currently end at Beverly and lack a continuous connection to the middle school at Terinda and to Club Drive. She said vehicle speeds on San Carlos Avenue feel fast, children on e-bikes are sometimes forced to share lanes with cars, and several stretches of the bike lane show large cracks and potholes that can push riders into traffic: "...they end at Beverly and I couldn't help but think that it would be much better for it to actually continue ... all the way to Club Drive ... a lot of children on ebikes ... having no choice but to try to share the lane with cars," Kayla said.
Staff present acknowledged there are capital projects tied to safe-schools improvements and a bike-ped master plan but said the right public-works staff were not present to provide project-specific responses during the meeting. Vice Chair Bundy and staff asked the commenter to email city staff so public works could follow up with details on planned projects or maintenance schedules.
No other members of the public spoke during the general public-comment period. The exchange did not produce a commission direction or vote; staff advised the resident to contact public works for a technical response and potential follow-up actions.
