Residents and students urge San Carlos to prioritize pedestrian safety on Crestview Drive

Peter, a Crestview Drive resident, told the council that families and children use the hills and that safety improvements would encourage walking and biking: "kids are more likely to be pedestrians, walkers, they use scooters to get to school…so please consider what your legacy is for them." He noted an earlier fatality on Crestview Drive about five years ago as a compelling reason to add pedestrian improvements.
High‑school students also testified in favor of the projects. Ben Manifo said he crosses Crestview Drive daily and described the proposed projects as "transformative" for pedestrian and bicycle safety; Miriam Cortich and another student speaker said traffic speeds and lack of safe crossings made students and parents fearful and that protected bike lanes and roundabouts could reduce risk and encourage sustainable travel.
Council members acknowledged the public input and did not take formal action on the projects during the meeting. Staff and council members indicated these projects would continue through the project's normal review and outreach process, and speakers encouraged the city to consider equity and long‑term safety when finalizing designs.
