Board members previewed two primary IV Safe agenda items for a Feb. 4 stakeholder meeting: county sheriff enforcement of the county festival ordinance and the district's spring-festival programming, including harm-reduction measures.
The board said clarity is needed about what the county will enforce (noise and amplified music vs. general gatherings) and requested that Lieutenant Schmidt prepare answers in advance. The district said it invites a broad group of stakeholders to IV Safe (county sheriff, county fire, county supervisor and staff, UCSB, student groups and community organizations) and will run breakout-style stakeholder groups in person to craft messaging, risk/harm-reduction plans and success metrics.
Maya described a "divide and conquer" approach: separate subgroups on messaging, risk and harm reduction, and success metrics led by staff members Jonathan and Sydney; the groups will reconvene to share plans. Board members emphasized inviting public-information officers to align messaging and avoid inadvertently promoting large out-of-area attendance. They also asked for clarification at a future item about jurisdictional roles between UCPD, campus patrol and the sheriff's office for investigating crimes and sexual assaults reported in Isla Vista.
The preview signaled the board's intent to use the IV Safe meeting to coordinate cross-agency enforcement, outreach and communications ahead of March events.
