Galita Valley Library will keep 20 hours for Isla Vista book van but reduce community-center visits

District staff reported that the Galita Valley Library has restructured its book-van schedule: the van will continue to provide 20 hours of service in Isla Vista but has reduced the community-center stop from three days to two. Maya, the staff lead for library coordination, said she requested outreach strategies — pop-up events, Sunday service windows and tabling at the district's major events — but the library told staff it lacks the personnel to take on additional outreach.

Maya said she negotiated schedule consistency so that the van's presence is the same week to week, and she worked to align one of the community-center days with tutoring hours to reach different demographics. Board members asked for the full list of stops and for the district to amplify outreach, particularly for major events such as Utopia. Staff said county funds are provided to the city of Galita to deliver library services, and the district has previously questioned whether Isla Vista's share of county funding is spent on Isla Vista-specific services; staff confirmed that the 20 hours were preserved in this scheduling round but that distribution changed.

Board members encouraged staff to continue discussions with library leadership and to convene the district's library committee to consider long-term service models and budgeting.
