La Mesa interviews candidates for Youth Advisory Commission; appointments set for Sept. 23

Presenters included Maya (13), who cited choir and theater leadership; Miriam Garcia, an eighth grader and honors student who participates in theater and volunteer groups; Sochi Willow Gomez (13), who emphasized dance, guitar and youth-safety ideas including a bike-safety course; and Haley West (19), who described personal experience with homelessness and leadership in Model United Nations and community outreach. Lucille Alvi withdrew her application.
Each applicant gave a brief three-minute presentation and answered follow-up questions where appropriate. The city clerk said appointments will be finalized at the Sept. 23 council meeting.
What this means: The Youth Advisory Commission serves as a youth voice on city programming; councilmembers thanked applicants for participating and asked staff to return with appointments on Sept. 23.
