The La Mesa City Council voted unanimously on Nov. 12 to reestablish a La Mesa Library Task Force to advise staff and council on a planned library expansion tied to civic‑center revitalization.
Kirsten Iverson, president of the Friends of the La Mesa Library, told the council the branch is roughly 10,373 square feet, well below the 15,000 square foot recommendation in the San Diego County Library Master Plan for a medium‑sized branch. "Restarting the library task force now ensures this vital project continues moving forward in a timely and coordinated way for our short and long‑term goals," Iverson said.
Council Members Suzuki and Vice Mayor Casares sponsored the item and emphasized the need for diverse participation on the task force, not just returning members. Council directed staff to recruit broadly, including representatives of the Friends group and new community members, and to return with an organizational structure and timeline.
Motion to reinstate the task force carried with all council members voting yes. The council asked staff to bring back membership criteria, scope, and an outreach plan to ensure a broad set of stakeholders can participate.
