Desert Hot Springs council adjusts Little League registration fees; payment help available

The Desert Hot Springs City Council on Oct. 21 adopted revised subsidized registration fees for the city-run Little League program after staff and the advisory board reviewed season financials.
Staff reported the advisory board voted unanimously to increase the previously adopted subsidized registration rates by $10 per player to offset rising equipment costs. For the 2026 season staff presented the following rates: $85 early registration (first four weeks), $105 regular registration and $135 late registration (effective Jan. 19, 2026). Staff estimated an incremental revenue increase of $1,420 if registration numbers match prior years.
Council members raised concerns about affordability for low-income families. Denise Abil said community sponsors continue to help cover registration costs and the city offers a customizable payment plan for families that cannot afford the fee. A parent advisory member, Matt Writtenhouse, spoke in favor of the program and thanked council and volunteers for supporting youth sports in the community.
Mayor Pro Tem moved to adopt the fee report; Council Member Voss seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Staff said they will continue to seek sponsors and make payment arrangements to ensure participation for families with financial need.
The council emphasized that the program remains priced below comparable youth-sports options in the area and that subsidies were retained to keep participation accessible.
