He said district priorities will include strengthening academic excellence at every school, enhancing positive behavior supports, expanding counseling and wellness, and broadening career-pathway options.
On facilities, Dr. Marcus noted the district's recent bond funds and said he will emphasize projects on the Desert Hot Springs side of the freeway to ensure those campuses receive attention. He described a process to craft a multi-year vision through 2030 and said the first implementation steps would begin July 1, 2026.
Council members praised the presentation and urged accountability. One council member said, "When I say something, I mean it," and multiple council members said they would hold the superintendent to his commitments. The council invited the superintendent to return in six months with an update.
The superintendent introduced himself as a former teacher and district administrator and described his family and professional background; he emphasized being present in Desert Hot Springs and committed to being responsive to community concerns.
The council expressed support for a focus on mental-health resources and school safety, and singled out Principal Tanokco at Desert Hot Springs High School for commendation. The superintendent's presentation concluded with an invitation to continued partnership between the city and the district and a request that the community hold district leadership accountable to the stated priorities.
