Staff said an updated estimate narrowed the cost gap between designs with and without a viewing platform; as a result, trustees asked the engineer to prepare designs that include the platform as an add-alternate so the sidewalk or platform can be added or removed in the final contract. One trustee noted the viewing platform disperses riverfront amenities and could be designed more cost-effectively with further refinement of guardrail typologies and materials.
Trustees also asked that the design be brought to the planning board/Historic Review Board for input. Traffic improvements discussed included sidewalk bump-outs, crosswalk additions and improved pedestrian safety near the train station. Staff said the engineer would incorporate the most salient sidewalk and bump-out fixes into the next design package and would price these as add-alternates where feasible.
No final construction authorization or bid award occurred at the workshop; trustees directed staff to proceed with design work that includes the viewing platform option and to return with a refined estimate and materials for the planning/Historic Review Board review.
