Staff said local amendments clarify permit handling in the historic district, adjust the local permit size threshold (160 square feet in local code vs. the state standard mentioned in staff remarks), and incorporate wildland‑urban interface and defensible‑space references consistent with recent local ordinances. Council held the required first reading by title and scheduled a second reading and public hearing for Jan. 28, 2026.
Second, the council introduced an ordinance to amend section 2.40.010 to consolidate Nevada City’s election date with county and state timing (moving regular municipal elections to June). The mayor and city attorney framed the change as an administrative alignment that reduces timing gaps between election certification and assumption of office. Council unanimously approved introduction and set Jan. 28 for second reading and adoption.
Both items passed their first readings; council recorded unanimous votes to advance the ordinances to the second reading and public hearing date.
