County supervisor highlights efforts to recruit health-care providers and a down-payment program for providers

Merced County Supervisor McDaniel briefed the Atwater City Council on county activities, including a new deputy director of economic development and county coordination on food-insecurity services.
McDaniel said the county has engaged the food bank during a presentation about continuing high demand following the COVID period (Supervisor McDaniel). He introduced Tamara Spade as a new deputy director of economic development who has been meeting locally with businesses and community partners (Supervisor McDaniel).
To boost the local health-care workforce, McDaniel described a plan under discussion with Golden Valley Healthcare and Blossom Memorial Health Care Districts to offer down-payment assistance or similar incentives to attract physician assistants, doctors and other providers, leveraging the Golden State Finance Authority and connections with UC Merced—s new medical school. "We—re trying to see ... how we can bring in more providers to make it more appeasing," he said, adding staff are discussing formats to encourage providers to locate in the county and stay (Supervisor McDaniel).
McDaniel also said the county—s preliminary projected budget is about $1.15 billion and reminded the council that the county—s final budget hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23.
The council listened but did not take formal action on the supervisor's update. Staff and council members expressed interest in continuing coordination on local recruitment and housing incentives for critical workers.
