The San Dimas City Council voted to award a contract to replace swim blocks at the city’s competition pool, approving a total project cost presented as $78,485.45.
City staff said the existing blocks were installed in 2006 and had become slippery and wobbly at their concrete anchors; staff removed them to avoid a safety hazard and recommended replacement with units that meet USA Swimming requirements. Staff described the purchase as routine maintenance but noted the cost is significant.
Bonita Unified School District agreed to pay half of the cost ($35,675) because its swim teams use the facility for practice and hosted events; staff said the district would also share one-half of any contingency spending. Staff reported the recreation-center improvement fund would retain about $234,088.50 after the project if approved.
Council members asked about expected lifespan (staff estimated about 20 years based on the removed blocks) and whether covers or storage could extend life; staff said vendors’ higher-end models do not necessarily last longer and that covers could be considered to extend lifespan.
A motion to award the contract passed by voice vote, recorded as 5–0. The contract award authorizes the city manager to negotiate and execute a contract in a form acceptable to the city attorney.
