San Dimas appoints 16-year-old Maya Yasin as non-voting youth commissioner

The San Dimas City Council appointed Maya Yasin, 16, as the city's non-voting youth commissioner on the Parks & Recreation Commission at its Aug. 22 meeting.
City staff said Yasin was interviewed by the parks and recreation manager and supervisor and was selected for demonstrating leadership and community engagement qualities. "I just turned 16 years old in May, and I am so excited and so honored to be given this position," Yasin said, adding she looks forward to "making San Dimas an even better place."
Council members asked about her choice of commission. Yasin said she initially listed public safety as her top choice because she plans to pursue pre-law in college, but after discussing her passion for local parks and community events during the interview she felt Parks & Recreation was the best fit.
Staff clarified that the appointee will fill the unexpired first term of Commissioner Jesse Ashe, which runs through 2026; the appointee may be eligible for additional terms per the updated boards-and-commissions policy. Council moved, seconded and carried the appointment by voice vote.
