Compton council appoints members to commissions and begins forming charter committee; application deadline extended

The Compton City Council used its Jan. 27 meeting to staff several city advisory bodies and to begin forming an 11-member charter committee that will help prepare charter-review work.
On the consent and appointment calendar the council confirmed Rasha Young to the Planning Commission by roll-call vote. The council also appointed David Cobert, Jessica Hunter and Virginia Brown to the Olympic Committee. Nominees without submitted applications (including one Helen Chan) were deferred for later consideration.
Councilmembers then undertook charter-committee appointments. Under the charter-committee rules approved earlier, the mayor may appoint three members and each councilmember may appoint two, producing an 11-member body. The council appointed multiple residents and community stakeholders (including Lama Butler, Rodney Listister, Dolores Williams, Dr. Crystal Williams, Mac Warren, Shirley Gideon and Fidel Marquez) during the meeting. Several other nominees were to be considered next week as councilmembers finalized selections.
The council extended the application deadline for charter-committee candidates through close of business Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, and confirmed the committee will meet on the first and third Mondays at 5:30 p.m., beginning in February. City staff said the extension was intended to provide time for additional vetted applicants and to ensure the committee can start work in time for any November ballot consideration.
