Boone County approves microsurfacing contract, two fiber bore resolutions and minor procurements

The Boone County Board of Commissioners approved a series of routine contracts and resolutions at its April 20 meeting in Albion, including awarding a microsurfacing contract, approving two fiber-bore resolutions for telecommunication service, and authorizing the purchase of two Halotron fire extinguishers for courthouse IT rooms.
Highway Superintendent Brian McDonald told the Board that the apparent low bidder for the 2026 microsurfacing project lacked an indicated start date and was therefore not responsive. The Board voted to accept a bid from Missouri Petroleum Products Company for approximately $587,690.00. "Motion by Niewohner, second by Yosten to accept Missouri Petroleum Products Company bid for approximately $587,690.00 as presented. Roll call vote: Yeas: Niewohner, Yosten, and Lindgren. Nays: None. Motion carried," the record states.
The Board also reviewed and approved two telecommunication requests from Midstates Data Transport (doing business as Stealth Broadband) to bore fiber-optic cable in county right-of-way. Resolution 2026-12 authorizes a bore in Section 3, Township 20 North, Range 6 West on the north side of the road commonly known as 230th Street; Resolution 2026-13 authorizes a bore in Section 15, Township 19 North, Range 8 West on the east side of a road commonly known as 130th Avenue. Both resolutions were approved by roll-call votes.
Facilities maintenance presented four quotes for 2.5-pound fire extinguishers for IT rooms. The Board approved purchasing two Buckeye Halotron extinguishers from American Fire & Life Safety at approximately $375 each.
Other routine business included a statutory jail walkthrough under Nebraska State Statute § 47-109, acceptance of the sheriff’s quarterly office totals for January–March, and the road department's general report (items discussed included a District #1 road shop heater, surplus equipment auction results, excavator locations and a possible wheel-rake attachment). The Board accepted the road report and several departmental reports by unanimous roll-call votes.
