Compton council approves five-year agreement with SEIU Local 721

The Compton City Council voted to approve a five-year memorandum of agreement with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 721 that will cover July 2024–June 2029, the city said. The agreement, reached after more than a year of negotiations, was approved by roll call with council members voting to adopt the MOA.
City officials described the contract as the result of bargaining that began in February and concluded in January 2026. The city manager said the agreement is intended to "bring our employees closer to being in line with equivalent cities of our size" and to reduce the need for yearly re-negotiations.
The administration said the MOA closes a long-running negotiation and includes terms intended to make pay and benefits more competitive. Council members recorded vocal support for concluding the talks; there was no recorded substantive debate in the meeting minutes beyond staff remarks summarizing the negotiations.
The vote to approve the MOA passed by roll call; the motion was announced as carried during the meeting. City staff and SEIU will be responsible for implementing the terms through their respective human-resources and payroll processes.
The council did not outline line-item budget changes during the public discussion; the administration presented the agreement as consistent with the city’s multi-year bargaining strategy and budget process. The council may receive additional implementation details and budget impacts in follow-up staff reports.
