The Town of Oakland Commission on March 24 read certified March 10 election results and swore in three commissioners.
An official reported 3,629 registered voters and 542 ballots cast for the election that included a commission seat and charter amendments, described in the meeting as roughly 14.9% turnout. The commission noted seven undervotes on the charter questions and said all six charter amendments on the ballot were approved.
After the results were read, the commission administered oaths to newly elected and returning members. Chris Keller took the oath and told the room he was “incredibly proud and humbled to continue to serve the residents of the town of Oakland,” and encouraged residents to consider serving on the Appearance Review Board and Planning & Zoning committee.
Nico L Miley, after taking the oath, said she was “overwhelmed with joy and gratitude” and pledged to work “dutyfully, faithfully, and with integrity for the work of the residents of the town of Oakland.” Joseph McMullen, who was also sworn in, thanked supporters and invited those who did not vote for him to talk directly: “Let’s talk. Let’s have a conversation.”
Why it matters: commissioners oversee local land-use decisions, contracts and municipal services that affect day-to-day life in town. The approved charter amendments will change the town charter as presented to voters; the commission did not detail further implementation steps during the meeting.
The commission noted open seats on the ARB and Planning & Zoning boards and encouraged residents interested in serving to apply. The meeting proceeded to regular business after the oath ceremonies.
