Greenville ISD board adopts 2026–27 academic calendar (option 2B) after debate on fall break and bus schedules

The Greenville ISD board voted 5–2 to adopt the district’s 2026–27 academic calendar designated as option 2B, which includes an August start date for teachers, a shortened fall break and two early‑release days at semester ends.
District staff reviewed three calendar themes presented from a committee and community survey and explained that options 2A and 2B were refined to respond to feedback. Staff said both 2A and 2B include built‑in bad‑weather days and additional instructional minutes; option 2A preserves a full fall break while 2B shortens it. “Each one of these options has about 169 student uh student days built in and 187 uh teacher days,” a district staff member (Mr. Underwood) explained during the presentation.
Board members debated the impact on extracurriculars and athletics (football, volleyball, band and cheer), bus routing and whether extra instructional minutes could be used to shorten the school day. One board member noted that fall break dates will not avoid some competition schedules and that students involved in seasonal extracurriculars would still be required to attend events.
A motion to adopt calendar 2B was moved and seconded; the motion carried by a 5–2 roll call. The board did not direct staff to return alternate calendars; staff will implement calendar 2B and proceed with notifications to families and staff.
