Swain County Board names Dr. Brandon Sutton superintendent in 3-2 vote
Summary
The Swain County Board of Education voted 3-2 to approve Dr. Brandon Sutton as the district's new superintendent; the meeting also approved routine consent items and budget amendments and moved to closed session under statute.
The Swain County Board of Education voted to recommend and approve Dr. Brandon Sutton as the district's new superintendent.
The chair moved the recommendation and the motion passed with three members in favor and two opposed. After the vote the chair congratulated Dr. Sutton and said the board would be in touch.
Prior to that vote the board approved the consent agenda (personnel and minutes) and approved the budget amendments that had been presented earlier in the meeting. When asked whether the board wanted to approve the local county budget request numbers that evening, the board voted to table that item for further discussion.
Before adjourning to closed session, the board moved under General Statute 143-318.11 subsections A1 and A5 to discuss privileged or confidential information with its attorney. The meeting record shows the motion to enter closed session was made, seconded and carried.
Next steps: Dr. Sutton is expected to begin his role as superintendent per the board's process; the board will be in touch to finalize transition details and will hold a publicly noticed work session on cameras and additional budget discussions.
