Veronica Shannon Gutiérrez addressed the council and attendees, describing poetry as a ‘‘free gift’’ that gathers people and ideas and recalling the teacher who inspired her. "I kept my dream alive because of Ms. Pajarita and today I am Ms. Pajarita," she said, describing her intention to give back through readings, workshops and public events to make poetry common language in the city.
The council approved the proclamation by unanimous voice vote and invited Ms. Gutiérrez and family for a photograph following the ceremony.
