Residents press Pico Rivera council on handball courts, pool repairs and code enforcement

Anna Delgado urged the council not to remove the handball courts at Rio Hondo Park, saying the courts — in place since the 1970s and still actively used by youth and elders — are culturally important and host tournaments. Parks staff offered to follow up after the meeting and suggested design meetings are ongoing for Rio Hondo Park upgrades, including the addition of pickleball courts.
Resident Liz Toscano said multiple code-enforcement complaints about a nearby property on Maxine Street (trash, debris, noise, non-permitted construction) had not been resolved to her satisfaction and asked the city for accountability and direct follow-up from code staff and the sheriff’s office. The city manager requested staff to work with Toscano and provide an update to the council.
Long-time resident Daniel Cano asked about repairs to a city lap pool. The public works director said the pool contract was recently awarded, construction is slated to begin in June and the approximate completion timeline is two years.
Library manager Lauren Talbert reported that the Rivera Library is temporarily closed for construction and is expected to remain closed through about May 2026; the Pico Rivera library will provide additional hours to cover library service needs during the closure.
