William Doyle Jr., the petitioning tenant who said his address is 905 North Lee Road, told commissioners he was “here just to answer questions” and described the planned use as light motor-vehicle service — oil changes, starter and alternator work, and tire sales and repair — not heavy automotive work. He said the request seeks to reduce the required on-site parking from 14 spaces to 7 and to allow less landscaping than current standards would require.
The petitioner described the building’s recent history: he said Acadian Shutter used the site for storage and moved out in December, and cleanup of the site began in late January into February. Doyle added he and his operators have experience running tire stores, naming locations in Slidell and Kenner. “We’re only looking to make it better,” Doyle said, adding plans to change the building colors and obtain sign approval before installing new signage.
Commissioners asked about landscaping and curb appeal. Doyle said there are trees along the West 29th side of the property and that he plans to place shade-tolerant shrubs and small planters between service bays to improve the site’s appearance.
A motion to approve the variance was made and seconded. On a roll-call vote the five commissioners present — Ms. Butler, Mr. Gilly, Ms. Williams, Mr. Romage and Mr. Jenkins — each voted Yes and the motion carried 5-0.
The approval allows the tenant to proceed with the proposed light automotive use subject to any permitting and sign approvals required by the city. The meeting record did not specify conditions appended to the motion, the full text of the motion, or the names of the motion maker and seconder.
