San Gabriel staff outline playhouse programming plan; historical association fundraiser set for Sept. 4

City staff updated the Historic Preservation and Cultural Resource Commission July 30 on early planning for playhouse programming and community outreach, and announced a fundraising event for the San Gabriel Historical Association.

Staff said the city’s arts consulting team, overseen by Community Services Director Rebecca Perez, held an initial strategic planning workshop on July 9 and will conduct additional community workshops and outreach as the program develops. Staff asked commissioners to forward names of stakeholders and local groups the consultant should contact. "We are looking at some potential dates to have the consulting firm come before the commission and to have some focus workshops and discussions on programming," staff said.

Staff also reported that City Council recently approved a partnership with a symphony organization to bring performances to the playhouse and that the city will promote programming beyond the city’s borders to draw regional audiences.

In addition, staff and the historical association announced a fundraiser to honor museum curator Camila Lopez. The event is scheduled for Sept. 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the Grapevine Arbor; staff asked those seeking details to contact city hall for RSVP and ticket information. A commissioner urged promoting the city’s historic landmarks and noted a separate preservation awards effort to recognize recent restoration work at La Ligona Playground.

What’s next: Staff said it will return with dates for community workshops and additional updates as the playhouse programming process continues.
