Bell Gardens expands art-and-yard-sale program, shifts hours and adds rotating spaces

The Bell Gardens City Council received an update Monday on the city’s Art & Yard Sale pilot and approved staff’s recommendation to restructure the program to accommodate more residents.
Recreation & Community Services Director Liz Nava said the popular Friday market will move to 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. starting in March and will use a rotating schedule to make space for more sellers: 90 spots will be split into two rotating groups of approximately 80 active slots each, with the groups trading their assigned Fridays every two weeks. To serve residents who do not want a recurring slot, staff will offer 10 day‑passes for occasional sellers. The program will also expand to include Sundays during the city’s quarterly garage‑sale weekends and will hold additional holiday craft fairs.
Nava said the changes are intended to clear a waiting list that has grown over the program’s two‑year run, to keep the initiative focused on resident-made goods and used personal items (food and commercial resale remain prohibited), and to preserve the program’s community‑building purpose. Staff said there is no direct impact to the general fund from the restructuring.
Council members praised the program’s growth and supported the new schedule; the council moved to receive and file the report by roll-call vote.
