Hampton City Schools honored with Cognia Excellence in STEM award as board spotlights Master Plan 2.0

Hampton City Schools received the Cognia Excellence in STEM Education Award during the School Board's April 1 meeting, a recognition presented by Dr. Soyers of Cognia.
"On behalf of Cognia, I am proud to present Hampton City Schools with the Cognia Excellence in STEM Education Award," Dr. Soyers told the board, praising the division's systemwide vision, equity focus and the Academies of Hampton model.
The award capped remarks about Master Plan 2.0, "Connecting the Dots," a K'12 roadmap presented by Chief Academic Officer Dr. James Harris that the district said aligns student experiences across grade levels and emphasizes project-based, real-world learning. Harris told the board the division welcomed more than 400 attendees to a division showcase at Kecoughtan High School and highlighted that 20 student winners were recognized among presentations from elementary through high school.
Board members praised the student presentations. "I was never so blown away by those fifth graders," said Ms. Cherry, one of several members who commended the students' confidence and the work of educators. Dr. Banks-Gray also thanked teachers for preparing students to present with poise: "These kids were ready and excited to present and we were blown away."
The meeting also recognized more than 60 educators who completed the Teacher Leadership professional learning series; certificates and board coins were presented at the dais. District leaders said the program is part of the division's multi-year induction strategy to develop instructional leaders.
District leaders noted the Master Plan 2.0 showcase emphasized career pathways and hands-on displays tied to the Academies of Hampton. Superintendent Dr. Haynes and staff urged community members to take part in a strategic-plan input survey opening April 3 to help shape district priorities through 2031.
The board will reconvene for its next regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 26 at Jones; the administration said it will provide follow-ups and additional details about Master Plan 2.0 implementation and opportunities for community engagement.
