District proposes moving K–5 math review earlier and other cycle adjustments

Rationale: math teachers will remain subject‑specialized after schedule changes, existing elementary math materials have not been updated since about 2015 and best practice suggests a seven‑year cycle for curricular review. Moving math earlier reduces the risk of overlapping K–5 science and math reviews and the budgetary strain of implementing two major K–5 materials changes simultaneously.
Other proposed adjustments include separating secondary math electives from core secondary math to reduce workload on the same teachers, reflecting fifth‑grade implementation activity already underway in art/music/FIAD, and exempting some intervention and specialized programs from the seven‑year cycle so they can be reviewed on a more responsive timetable.
Committee members indicated they understood the need for a fluid, living curriculum cycle and asked no substantive objections. The committee will receive future updates as the CNI team refines timelines and implementation plans; any formal changes would be processed through the committee and board approval steps.
