Residents raise safety concerns about Kalis Road and emergency gate; county to convene stakeholders

At the start of the meeting Joseph Lowe, a resident of 250 Mission Road, told the commission traffic on Kalis Road has gotten worse since a subdivision opened and urged the county to widen the road, citing narrow lanes, school buses and a blind hill where drivers must pull off to pass.
Chair told Lowe that Superintendent Steve Murphy would follow up during his report. Later in the meeting Murphy and commissioners agreed to follow up and said staff would contact Lowe about possible solutions.
Commissioners and attendees also discussed a gate used for emergency access on Callis/Tallis Road. A commissioner and a former fire chief said the gate had been opened on the advice of emergency personnel but expressed concern about drivers abusing the access and leaving debris. Commissioners agreed to attempt to convene the mayor and other stakeholders for a meeting to set a durable operating protocol for the gate.
The board also noted routine tree-trimming and roadside maintenance schedules and asked staff to follow up on trimming in the area raised by a commissioner.
