The school board voted to advertise a package of proposed policy changes Wednesday that would update athletics and extracurricular rules, expand transportation flexibility and alter vacation-leave eligibility for certain new hires.
John Lot, a presenter for the meeting, told the board the changes are prompted in part because Bronson moved from the Florida High School Athletic Association to the Sunshine State Athletic Association. He said the district must update multiple policies that reference the old association and cited proposed edits to policy numbers 3.31, 4.31 and 4.44. “We eliminated the old and we brought in the new effect policy,” Lot said while describing the package.
Lot explained the board would split a previously combined athletics-and-extracurriculars policy into two separate policies to make future updates easier and to align district rules with model language adopted by other districts in the NEAC group. He recommended adopting an alternate version of policy 9.11 used by Sarasota County that gives the district discretion to transport students to some events (for example, large-team travel) but rely on parents for others, a change he said would ease bus and driver shortages and reduce costs.
On personnel policy 6.25, Lot said the draft language would allow new assistant principals hired on an 11‑month contract to receive vacation leave, correcting what he described as an oversight that would otherwise deny those employees leave available to 12‑month staff.
After the presentation a board member moved and another seconded to advertise the proposed policies for public review; the motion passed. The board did not record a roll-call vote in the transcript. The board will next take public input during the advertised comment period and is expected to return for formal adoption at a later meeting.
The changes discussed affect district policy language and administrative practice; no ordinance or statutory change was enacted at the meeting.
