DOT narrows Fort Bridge work plan after community push; only brief lane interruptions expected

Staff updated the planning board on the Fort Bridge project and said Maine DOT engineers conducted structural testing that reduced the need for an extended full closure. According to staff, DOT now expects to avoid the previously discussed multi-month full closure and instead will schedule brief 15–20 minute interruptions only as equipment and moves require, with prior notice and coordination so emergency vehicles can be accommodated.
Staff credited the community and local officials for influencing DOT’s decision. The online public meeting generated about 23 pages of written comments from residents and businesses raising concerns about traffic rerouting, business impacts and emergency access; staff also noted Representative Jarrett had several meetings with DOT officials and local emergency management and the county emergency manager (Darren Woods) helped coordinate contact with DOT.
"They've done structural tests and they will not have to close the bridge; it will have to be closed for 15 or 20 minutes a few times while we move equipment or move different things, but we will give you notice," staff said. The board asked staff to continue coordination and to request advance notice and traffic-control plans for each brief interruption.
