American Legion post presents $1,000 scholarships to 11 Harrison students

During the April 7 Harrison City Council meeting, a representative from Jaeger Benson Post (American Legion) presented $1,000 scholarships to 11 students from local high schools.
"So tonight's my honor to present 11 students with 1000 dollars each for scholarships from Jaeger Benson post 199. This does not come out of our charity account. This comes out of our post account," the American Legion presenter said as recipients were called forward. The presenter said each recipient also received a challenge point and encouraged the audience to hold applause until the end so the presentation would proceed quickly. Names read included students from Harrison High School and other area schools; recipients were invited on stage for photographs.
The presenter also noted the post's ongoing monthly support for the mayor's fund: "Every month, we present a check to the Harrison mayor's fund because we believe in supporting our community ... this is from the charities committee, our commitment to you of $2,500 each and every month." The post's scholarship awards totaled $11,000.
The council offered congratulations and the mayor thanked the American Legion and other local nonprofits for community support.
