A historical society representative updated the Brentwood Town select board on efforts to preserve a 175-year-old town-owned historic building and outlined plans to seek grant funding to restore windows. The presenter said the building has been placed on the New Hampshire historic register, which enabled earlier foundation and assessment grants; the town previously appropriated $10,000 as matching funds for foundation work and $6,500 as a match for a building assessment.
The presenter said the preservation assessment identified window restoration as a top priority. Two contractor estimates were reported: one at about $91,000 (approximately $3,500 per window for 24 windows) and another estimate in the low $70,000s; the presenter said a third estimate is outstanding. The presenter described the work as restoration and reglazing rather than wholesale replacement and said storm (exterior) windows were recommended to protect restored sashes and reduce heat loss.
Board members asked whether the windows can be restored in phases, how interior/exterior storm options compare, and whether grants such as LCHIP allow phased work; the presenter said the team will pursue an LCHIP application and that matching funds would be required. The presenter also noted that one window has been prioritized (a blown-out, ground-floor unit) and that the historical society and town representatives will continue to seek competitive quotes and refine the scope before committing town matching funds.
The board thanked the presenter and encouraged the society to pursue grants and bring back final estimates and a funding plan for the town to consider.
